'm the president of the united states, but it was a little defensive about it because, you know, he probably should have gotten rid of dulles. they are clearer in retrospect than they are at the time. ike was a great manager, but he was arguably a little slow to get rid of people. i think not in world war ii, no problem with sacking generals in world war ii, but maybe a little slow in his own administration, at least in the second term. this is one squishy area in his presidency. i spent a lot of time on it. my long study of intelligence on the outside, amateur at it, but presidents think you can snap your fingers, and the cia does miraclous things. it doesn't work that way. eisenhower did understand that. he was reasonable about this. this is all highly relevant because right now, i'm sure the united states is thinking about covert action on iran. the golden years of the cia are about to come back because we don't want to attack iran. we don't to bomb iran because that starts a war, but on the other hand, we don't want iran to get nuclear weapons. take those off the table, that leaves covert actio

't be surprising to see a skate-along through the session. you mentioned defense stocks. the sequester sectors have been doing quite well. financials, obviously. housing stocks on a tear this year. but take a look also at the defense index. the philadelphia defense index, we are very close to all-time highs on this defense index. there are a couple of names to watch within this index. general dynamics, which has had a nice run since about the mid-november time frame or so, announcing today that along with huntingtonengles, it has won a navy submarine contract. and those are secure even if the defense department undergoes sequestration. interesting deal being made there. >> taking a look at some of the biggest names that are among the biggest losers. traders have told us, if you're in the money on a lot of these names, why not take some money off gap for instance, masco. names like that are related to housing and retail. >> and speaking of retail, coors, third straight day of losses for shares of coors. a big winner so far this year. yesterday, citigroup had cautious comments from itses, saying in s

on every american taxpayer and devastating defense cuts will go into effect in 10 days. the house has already passed bills addressing the fiscal cliff. we passed a bill replacing the president's sequestered with irresponsible spending cuts. we did that last may. we passed a bill to stop all the tax hikes on the american people scheduled to take effect january 1, and we did that august 1. and we proposed plans over and over again that democrats used to support but now will not. i do not want taxes to go up, republican do not want texas to go up. but we only when the house. democrats continued to run washington. what the president has proposed so far simply will not do anything to solve our spending problems. he wants more spending and more tax hikes that will hurt our economy. and he simply will not deal honestly with entitlement reform and the big issues facing our country. we need significant spending cuts and real tax reform to address our long-term debt problem and pave the way for long-term growth and real growth in jobs in our country. we will continue to work with colleagues in

to kick in. that's the only way we'll cut defense spending in this country. what is happening with the sequester? where are we on the pentagon cuts? >> nobody wants those pentagon cuts, including the president of the united states. there may be some on the left who would favor that. but that's not a dominant position. that's not where the political center of gravity is in the country. i think it's very likely that those sequester cuts are going to be turned off. now, remember the sequester, $1.2 trillion over the next nine years. that's a little over $100 billion a year. so half of that is defense, half of that is discretionary. the kick the can mini deal solution that we're talking about would identify some subset of spending cuts that would be the lowest hanging fruit still available that might turn off the sequester, or they could just turn off the trigger all together. the sequester exists because of a law passed by congress, another law passed by congress could change it. >> good to see you, john. thanks for the update. >> mastercard spending pulse saying it's the lowest

think that is the fine type of leadership -- yes, in this area of the proper defense of our consulates overseas, the proper thing was done. in other areas, not for political purposes, but for making sure we get the right lessons learned that has to be completed in terms of investigation. we need the fbi to finish the criminal investigation to find out the perpetrators, terrorists, that did this so we can get them. second, in what the talking points episode was all about, how come the interagency, good reasons or bad reasons, changed those talking points overtime? we need -- as senator feinstein once said, to understand the process so it's done better in the future. a big believer of lessons learned and applying them. which didn't happen in the state department this time. it was not needing, the restriction and requirements of the last accountability review board completed in 1999. we didn't have that meeting those standard and learned that lesson again. >> a painful one indeed. good to see you as always. many thanks. >> happy holidays. >> and to you in the one-minute play back, weird h
